Concrete in a freeze-thaw climate
A Midwest winter, including the Kansas City metro, repeatedly freezes water that has soaked into a slab. Ice expands. Surfaces scale. Joints open. The same physics shows up in other freeze-thaw belts. This page is climate talk for homeowners. It is not a claim that Pour Plan places concrete in Kansas City, and it is not a crew resume.
Water is the load
Saturated concrete plus a hard freeze is the usual failure pair. Drainage that leaves puddles, downspouts that wet one strip, and a dish in the middle all feed that cycle. The slope guide is the first half of winter durability. A sealed, well-drained surface still needs a mix that can take ice.
Air and the mix conversation
Ready-mix tickets in cold climates often list an air-entrained mix for exterior flatwork. The tiny air voids give freezing water a place to go. Bagged mixes vary. Read the bag. Interior slabs and exterior drives are not the same ticket. This site does not write mix designs. Ask the supplier what they batch for an outdoor residential pour in your county.
Thickness, base, and winter
Frost heave lifts a slab where the ground under it freezes unevenly. A uniform, drained base and a consistent thickness reduce that motion. They do not repeal frost depth. Footings that carry a building have a different frost conversation than a floating patio. The footing calculator will not set frost depth for you.
Salt and the first winter
Deicing salts can damage a young surface. Many finishers ask owners to stay off rock salt for the first winter, or longer, and to use sand for traction instead. Manufacturer and city rules differ. The point for this guide is simple: chemical attack is a maintenance choice, not a yardage number.
Joints and timing
Sawed or tooled joints need to happen on the schedule the mix and the weather allow. A late joint in a hot afternoon still matters in January, because the crack will already have chosen its own line. Control joints in brief names the groove. It will not space it. Cure the slab. Do not let it dry out in a wind and then freeze while it is still green.
