Slab thickness vs driveway thickness

Thickness is the number that moves yardage the fastest. A driveway that is two inches thicker than a patio is not a small change once you multiply by length and width. The slab calculator and the driveway calculator use whatever thickness you enter. They do not choose it for you.

Common field ranges

Many residential patio and sidewalk pours land near 3.5 to 4 inches once the forms are set. That range shows up in product literature and in a lot of backyard work. It is a starting conversation, not a permit.

Driveways are often specified thicker because cars and trucks concentrate load on a small tire patch. A 4-inch drive exists. A 5-inch or 6-inch drive also exists, especially where a pickup, a trailer, or a weak subgrade is in the plan. Garage slabs frequently use a 4-inch field with a thickened edge at the walls. Those thickened bands are closer to a footing than to the rest of the slab.

If someone quotes “standard 4 inches” for every pour, ask what vehicle and what soil they assumed. The same sentence is not equally true on rock and on wet clay.

What local code still decides

Cities publish minimums for public sidewalks, approaches, and sometimes for private drives that meet the street. Those numbers can be thicker than a patio. They can also require a particular base, a particular joint layout, or a particular mix. This guide does not list those rules because they change by jurisdiction.

Check the building department that has authority over the lot before you lock a thickness into an order. If the published minimum is 6 inches at the approach, entering 4 inches in the calculator will understate the yardage and the work.

How thickness enters the estimate

The volume formula is length × width × thickness, with thickness converted from inches to feet, then divided by 27 for cubic yards. Doubling thickness doubles yardage. A 10 ft by 20 ft rectangle at 4 inches is about 2.47 yd³. The same rectangle at 6 inches is about 3.70 yd³.

Use the thicker number if the slab steps down, or split the pour into two rectangles. A field plus a thickened band is two estimates, not an average: thickened edges. Then add a waste factor if the subgrade is uneven. The calculator will not invent that extra depth.

These ranges are field talk. They are not a structural design and not a substitute for the thickness written on an approved plan.
